"LEGACY:
Our Wealth of Music" is a one-woman-show in which performer/creator Maggie Brown
explores the evolution of African American music. Engaging her audience, she demonstrates
work songs of the slaves and anthologizes musical forms created all the way up to
present-day contemporary rap music.
Exciting, intelligent
"edutainment" for children and adults, LEGACY is a foot-tapping,
finger-snapping, narrative vocal tribute to the history of African American music. In her
own unique style, Maggie sings a wide spectrum of musical forms including spirituals,
blues, ragtime and jazz. From doo wop to disco and from bebop to hip hop, her presentation
is packed with history, information and music.
In
her own words . . .
I conducted research,
gathering musical information and material to conduct a study of the history and evolution
of African American music. This research certainly gave me an education on what I have
discovered to be a great wealth of creativity and brilliance in the contributions of
African Americans to what is now a multi-billion dollar music industry. The invincible
spirit of my ancestors was revealed to me. It made me very excited and I want to turn-on
others to the story that will lift the human spirit with music and song.
Since 1991, after being
invited by the Education Department of the Field Museum of Natural History to perform and
present "LEGACY: Our Wealth Of Music" in their world music program, I
have shared LEGACY with thousands via other museums, cultural centers, college
campuses and dozens of grammar and high school students throughout the US. |
